Overview

What is Rapid7 – and what do we do as a Rapid7 partner?

Rapid7 is a publicly traded provider of cybersecurity solutions and managed services with international operations. The company was founded in 2000 and is represented in Germany by Rapid7 Germany GmbH in Hallbergmoos near Munich. Many security professionals know Rapid7 primarily through Metasploit – the penetration testing tool is part of the vendor’s portfolio. As a Rapid7 partner in Germany, we advise organizations on Rapid7 solutions and support them from selection through to ongoing operations.

At the core of the offering is the Command Platform. It combines two tasks that are handled separately in many organizations: exposure management – capturing the attack surface, finding vulnerabilities, and prioritizing them by risk – and detection & response, i.e., detecting and fending off attacks in progress. The platform also includes solutions for cloud and application security as well as governance, risk & compliance; with managed detection & response (MDR), Rapid7 can take over round-the-clock monitoring on request. Familiar names such as Rapid7 InsightVM and InsightIDR are still around: InsightVM is now part of Exposure Command, and InsightIDR is the former name of Incident Command, which continues to appear in the vendor’s documentation.

Why Rapid7 is a good fit for us: we know the other side’s perspective. In penetration tests and red teaming exercises, we act like real attackers – so we know which vulnerabilities can actually be exploited and what traces an attack leaves behind. We bring this perspective to exposure management and threat detection: we help you roll out and operate the platform so that prioritization and detection match the attack paths that are realistic in your environment.

Our penetration tests remain vendor-independent. Scope, methodology, and evaluation are based on your engagement and recognized standards – not on which products you use. If you use Rapid7, we can also test, on request, whether detection and coverage hold up against a realistic attack. We name any gaps just as openly as we would for any other vendor.

Solutions

Rapid7 solutions at a glance

The Command Platform is modular. Which building blocks make sense depends on your environment, your goals, and your team’s capacity – we advise you on the selection.

  • Exposure Command (incl. InsightVM)

Exposure management for hybrid environments. InsightVM detects vulnerabilities via network scans and agents; a threat-aware risk score shows what should be fixed first. The Essentials package also includes Surface Command, while Ultimate adds cloud and application security.

  • Surface Command

Attack surface management that consolidates assets – including, via integrations, from existing tools – into a unified inventory and makes both the internal and the external attack surface visible. An asset graph shows relationships and how far the impact of a compromised system could reach.

  • Incident Command (formerly InsightIDR)

Next-gen SIEM that aggregates logs and telemetry from cloud, SaaS, endpoints, and hybrid environments and uses behavioral analytics (UEBA) to detect suspicious user and system activity. SOAR automation speeds up response; higher tiers add AI-assisted alert triage, deception technology, and XDR capabilities.

  • Managed Detection & Response (Rapid7 MDR)

Rapid7 monitors your environment around the clock from its own SOC. Analysts assess alerts across endpoints, cloud, identities, email, and network, investigate incidents, and contain them. In contracts and documentation, the service is also called Managed Threat Complete.

  • InsightAppSec

Dynamic application security testing (DAST) for web applications and APIs. With Attack Replay, development teams can reproduce findings directly and verify fixes. Scan engines are available in the cloud and for your own network.

  • Cloud Security (InsightCloudSec)

Real-time visibility into multi-cloud environments with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes: checks against compliance policies, permission analysis (CIEM), infrastructure-as-code scanning, and cloud threat detection. Functionally, Cloud Security is part of Exposure Command Ultimate.

  • Metasploit Pro

Rapid7’s commercial pentest software is aimed at penetration testers and security teams who want to simulate real attacks on their own network in a controlled way. For development and security research, the freely downloadable Metasploit Framework is also available.

  • Cyber GRC

Governance, risk & compliance on the Command Platform. Cyber GRC links controls, risks, third-party vendors, and evidence with security context from assets, vulnerabilities, and threats. Evidence can be mapped to multiple frameworks instead of being compiled anew for every audit.

Pentest and platform

Pentest results and Rapid7 data: how they complement each other

Rapid7 provides continuous situational awareness: which assets exist, where known vulnerabilities are, and which activities stand out. A penetration test answers a different question – what an attacker can actually do with those vulnerabilities. Only together do the two perspectives provide a reliable picture.

A typical example: exposure management reports a medium-severity vulnerability on an internal web server that ranks low in the prioritization. The pentest reveals that this very server exposes a service account’s credentials – which opens a path all the way to the domain controller. Insights like these flow back: the asset receives a higher priority, and together with your team, we check whether the individual steps of the attack would have been visible in your threat detection.

Conversely, Rapid7 data makes penetration tests more targeted. The asset inventory shows which systems are reachable from the internet, and forgotten systems stand out before the scope is finalized. After the test, you can track in exposure management whether fixed vulnerabilities stay fixed; we also confirm the remediation of the pentest findings in the free retest.

Don’t want to operate your own platform? Then our vulnerability assessment is an alternative.

Use cases

Typical use cases for Rapid7

  • Exposure Management

    Building exposure management

From asset inventory to remediation: you know which systems exist, where vulnerabilities are, and which should be fixed first – instead of working through hundreds of scanner findings by severity alone.

    • Unified inventory of internal and external assets
    • Threat-aware risk scoring instead of a plain CVSS list
    • Handover to patch and ticketing processes
  • Detection & Response

    Detecting and responding to attacks

With Incident Command in your own team or with Rapid7 MDR around the clock: suspicious activity is detected, assessed, and handled. If you run detection yourself, our Incident Response & Forensics team supports you in an emergency – remotely or on site.

    • Centralized analysis of logs and telemetry
    • Automation of recurring responses
    • Realistic testing of detection through red teaming
  • Cloud & AppSec

    Securing cloud and applications

For organizations that rely heavily on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud or develop their own web applications and APIs: misconfigurations, risky permissions, and vulnerabilities become continuously visible.

    • Checking cloud configurations against compliance policies
    • Handing DAST findings over to development, e.g., via Jira
    • Manual pentests to uncover logic flaws that no scanner finds

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Rapid7

Didn’t find your question? Call us at +49 2932 465265-0 or email info@rootsektor.de.

How is Rapid7 licensed?

Rapid7 offers its solutions in packages: in exposure management, Surface Command and Exposure Command in the Essentials and Ultimate tiers; Incident Command and Rapid7 MDR each come in several package tiers. In exposure management, pricing is based on the asset types and use cases actually in scope; according to the vendor, further use cases such as cloud or application security can be added without relicensing the entire environment. We prepare a specific quote together with Rapid7 based on your information.

Does Rapid7 replace a penetration test?

No. Rapid7 works continuously and automatically: exposure management finds known vulnerabilities and misconfigurations across the board, and Incident Command detects suspicious behavior. A penetration test goes deep manually – it chains vulnerabilities into attack paths, uncovers logic flaws in applications, and shows what an attacker can actually achieve. And whether your detection notices a real attack only becomes clear in a real-world test. The two complement each other.

We’re already a Rapid7 customer. Can you still support us?

Yes. Contact us if you want to expand your environment, add further solutions, or need support with configuration and operations. Whether and how existing contracts can be handled through us in the future is something we clarify with Rapid7 on a case-by-case basis. Independently of that, our penetration tests can also check how well your existing Rapid7 environment detects attacks.

Can I test Rapid7 before buying?

Rapid7 presents its solutions in product demos. A trial or proof of concept is possible on request, provided the vendor offers one for the solution in question – we clarify this as part of the quote. To make sure the trial provides a solid basis for your decision, we jointly define scope, duration, and success criteria in advance.

Where does Rapid7 store data?

For certain platform solutions, customers can choose one of five cloud regions, including Europe. According to Rapid7, data is not moved out of the selected region – subject to the privacy policy and the respective contract. Which solutions this applies to and how data is processed, for example in the managed service, is something we clarify with Rapid7 before the quote. If scan data needs to stay in your own data center, Rapid7 also offers Nexpose, an on-premises scanner.

Who provides support?

Rapid7 provides technical vendor support under your contract: you open and track support cases via the Rapid7 support portal, and the product documentation is available as well. At Rootsektor, you have a dedicated point of contact during the rollout. Any additional support we provide during ongoing operations – such as regular reviews or fine-tuning prioritization and detection – is agreed individually.
