SaaS Penetration Testing for Software Vendors

Security your customers can verify

Your platform processes data for many customers – a single flaw in tenant isolation, an API, or the cloud configuration can affect all of them at once. SaaS penetration testing from Rootsektor shows which vulnerabilities are actually exploitable and provides solid evidence for security questionnaires, audits, and RFPs.

Challenges

SaaS platform security: the challenges

Your platform consists of web applications, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and integrations. These very building blocks make up your attack surface – and it changes with every release.

  • Challenge 1

    Tenant isolation

In a multi-tenant architecture, the data of many customers resides in the same application, often even in the same database. A missing authorization check on a single endpoint can be enough for a user from one tenant – or an attacker with a hijacked account – to see another tenant’s data via manipulated IDs, exports, or shared storage.

  • Challenge 2

    APIs and integrations

Your front end, mobile apps, customer integrations, and webhooks all depend on your interfaces. Broken object level authorization (number one in the OWASP API Security Top 10), overly broad tokens, or insecure OAuth flows open the door to attackers. Automated scanners rarely detect such flaws.

  • Challenge 3

Fast releases and the supply chain

With continuous deployment, new endpoints, roles, and dependencies emerge all the time. On top of that come secrets in build pipelines and third-party open-source packages. A single annual test can capture this dynamic only to a limited extent.

Benefits

Benefits of a SaaS penetration test

A scanner delivers hits; a pentest delivers context. We show which vulnerabilities in your platform can actually be exploited and how far an attacker could get with them – up to and including access to other tenants.

  • Find exploitable vulnerabilities

Manual testing across web application, API, mobile app, and cloud – including business logic and privilege chains that automated scanners barely capture.

  • Verify tenant isolation

From a customer’s perspective, we deliberately attack the boundaries to other tenants. If the isolation holds, you have solid evidence – if it doesn’t, you hear it from us rather than from a customer or an attacker.

  • Support enterprise sales

With the test certificate, you can show customers – including in supplier audits – that your platform has been independently tested, without having to hand over the full technical report.

  • Plan remediation precisely

Every finding comes with a CVSS rating, reproduction steps, and a concrete recommendation – ready to transfer to your ticketing system. The free retest shows whether the fixes work.

Services

Our services for software and SaaS vendors

  • Web Applications & Online Shops

Customer dashboards, admin interfaces, self-service portals, and onboarding flows – with a focus on permission models, sessions, and business logic.

  • API Penetration Testing

REST, GraphQL, and webhook interfaces – authorization at object and function level, token handling, rate limiting, and mass assignment.

  • Cloud Penetration Testing

The AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud environment of your platform – IAM permissions, storage, containers, Kubernetes, and network segmentation.

  • Mobile Apps (iOS & Android)

The iOS and Android apps for your product – local data storage, transport encryption, and the APIs behind them.

  • AI & LLM Penetration Testing

AI assistants and LLM features in your product – prompt injection, data leakage between tenants, and insecure tool integrations.

  • Code Review & Reverse Engineering

Source code analysis of security-critical components such as authentication, tenant logic, and cryptography – ideal as a complement to a white-box test.

Regulations & standards

Evidence for customers, auditors, and regulators

A penetration test replaces neither a certification nor an attestation. But it provides exactly the technical evidence that auditors and customers ask for.

  • Certification & attestation

    ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2 & C5

In an ISO/IEC 27001:2022 audit, the pentest demonstrates the management of technical vulnerabilities (A.8.8) and security testing in development and acceptance (A.8.29). In SOC 2 examinations, it serves as evidence for monitoring and the effectiveness of your controls, for example for criteria CC4.1 and CC7.1. The C5 criteria catalog for cloud services from the BSI (Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security) also provides for regular penetration tests.

    • Scope, methodology, and testing period documented
    • Findings rated according to CVSS
    • Retest confirms remediation
  • Data protection

    GDPR & data processing

As controllers, your customers may only use processors that can reliably demonstrate appropriate technical and organizational measures (Art. 28 GDPR). Art. 32(1)(d) also requires a process for regularly testing their effectiveness.

    • Evidence of regular effectiveness testing
    • Basis for documenting your technical and organizational measures (TOMs) and for customer audits
  • EU regulation

    NIS2 & Cyber Resilience Act

Depending on their size and offering, cloud and managed service providers may fall under NIS2 themselves; in addition, customers subject to NIS2 pass security requirements on to their supply chain. Under the Cyber Resilience Act, manufacturers of installable software or apps offered in the EU will have to handle vulnerabilities systematically and test product security regularly.

    • Evidence for your customers’ supply chain requirements
    • Security testing for products with digital elements

How your SaaS penetration test works

We align the software pentest with your architecture and release cycle – as an annual full test, before major releases, or as a focused test of new features. The methodology is the same across all industries; here, the focus is on tenant isolation and APIs.

Scoping

We clarify architecture, tenant model, roles, API scope, cloud platform, test environment, and dates.

Fixed-price quote

Within 24 hours of scoping (on business days), you receive a fixed-price quote – with no hidden costs.

Preparation

You provide test accounts for at least two tenants and all relevant roles; test windows and contact persons are agreed.

Testing

Manual testing based on the OWASP WSTG, ASVS, and the OWASP API Security Top 10. We report critical vulnerabilities immediately – during the test, by phone or email to the agreed contact person.

Report & debrief

An executive summary, a technical section with CVSS ratings, and concrete remediation recommendations – if you wish, we discuss the results with your development team.

Retest & test certificate

After remediation, we retest free of charge. You can present the test certificate to customers, partners, and auditors.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about SaaS penetration testing

Didn’t find your question? Call us at +49 2932 465265-0 or email info@rootsektor.de.

How often should we have our SaaS platform tested?

An annual penetration test is a common minimum standard – many enterprise customers ask for exactly that. We also recommend testing after significant changes, such as a redesign of authentication, new tenant features, a cloud migration, or major API extensions. With a high release frequency, focused tests of individual features can easily be built into your release planning.

Do you test in production or in a staging environment?

Both are possible. A production-like staging environment is ideal because we can test more intensively there without touching customer data. We coordinate tests in production closely with you – with dedicated test tenants, fixed time windows, and no methods that put availability at risk.

Can you test tenant isolation?

Yes. For this, we need test accounts in at least two tenants, ideally with different roles. We then deliberately try to access other tenants’ data via object IDs, API calls, exports, search functions, file uploads, or invitation features.

How does a pentest fit into our CI/CD pipeline?

Automated tools such as SAST, DAST, and dependency scanning belong in the pipeline – they find known patterns quickly. A pentest adds what automation cannot: business logic, privilege chains, and chained vulnerabilities. We’re happy to help you integrate both effectively into your development processes.

What can we show our customers?

The test certificate is intended for customers, partners, and auditors: it proves the test without you having to hand over the full report. If a customer still requires insight into the details, it is best to share the report only under a non-disclosure agreement.

How much does a SaaS penetration test cost?

That depends on the scope: How many roles and tenant features are there, how large is the API, which integrations and cloud services are included – and should the test be performed as a gray-box or white-box test? After a short scoping session, you receive a fixed-price quote within 24 hours (on business days) – with no extra charges for the agreed scope.
