E-Commerce Penetration Testing for Online Shops & Retail

Sell securely – online and in store.

Your online shop is always available – to attackers, too. Our e-commerce penetration testing examines checkout, customer accounts, interfaces, and payment flows the way fraudsters would. For online retailers, marketplaces, omnichannel retailers, and retail chains.

Challenges

Challenges for e-commerce security

Shop system, plugins, payment providers, inventory management, shipping services, and marketing tools – a modern online shop consists of many building blocks. Every interface and every update can open a gap through which customer data leaks or fraudsters get their hands on goods.

  • Challenge 1

    Customer accounts in the crosshairs

Using stolen credentials, attackers run automated login attempts (credential stuffing). Hijacked accounts give them addresses, order histories, loyalty points, and stored payment methods.

  • Challenge 2

    Checkout manipulation

Dangerous vulnerabilities often lie in the business logic: prices that can be changed in the shopping cart, coupons that can be redeemed multiple times, fraudulently obtained refunds, or orders that count as paid even though the payment was aborted.

  • Challenge 3

    Plugins, scripts, and release pressure

Third-party extensions and embedded scripts expand the attack surface – up to and including e-skimming of payment data. And before the holiday season, changes often go live under time pressure.

Benefits

Benefits of penetration testing for e-commerce and retail

A scanner reports outdated plugins; a fraudster looks for shortcuts through your checkout. We test both – and show your team or your agency which gaps to close first.

  • Protect customer and payment data

We test customer accounts, interfaces, exports, and the admin backend to see whether they reveal more than intended – and whether injected scripts could intercept payment data.

  • Make fraud and account takeovers harder

We check whether your shop slows down automated login attempts, whether the password reset can be abused, and whether return or loyalty processes offer loopholes.

  • Protect revenue and availability

A compromised shop often has to go offline or spreads malicious code to your customers. Closing gaps before the peak season reduces the risk of nasty surprises when business is busiest.

  • Evidence for PCI DSS 4.0.1 and partners

The report and test certificate document your measures for payment service providers, marketplaces, B2B customers, and insurers.

Services

Services for e-commerce and retail

From the storefront to the POS system: we test the building blocks that drive your revenue.

  • Web Applications & Online Shops

Shopware, Magento, WooCommerce, or a custom build – storefront, checkout, customer account, admin backend, plugins, and themes.

  • API Penetration Testing

Headless front ends, integrations with inventory management, PIM, and marketplaces, as well as payment provider webhooks.

  • Mobile Apps (iOS & Android)

Shopping, store card, and loyalty apps – including the interfaces behind them.

  • Network & Infrastructure

Shop servers and hosting, store networks, POS systems, and segmentation of the card payment environment.

  • Cloud Penetration Testing

Commerce platforms in AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud – from permissions to publicly accessible storage.

  • Dark Web Monitoring

Using our own applications, we automatically monitor the dark web and notify you when customer data or credentials for your shop turn up – after that, we support you with countermeasures.

Compliance

Regulations and standards in retail

Penetration tests provide technical evidence for payment service providers, supervisory authorities, and business partners. They do not replace a PCI DSS 4.0.1 assessment or an audit.

  • Card payments

    PCI DSS 4.0.1

If you accept card payments, you must comply with the standard – even if a payment service provider handles most of the work. Which requirements apply depends on your payment integration – for most merchants, on the applicable self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ).

    • Requirement 11.4: penetration tests at least once every twelve months and after significant changes
    • Segmentation tests for POS and shop networks
    • Requirements 6.4.3 and 11.6.1: protecting payment pages against e-skimming
  • Customer data

    GDPR

Art. 32 GDPR requires state-of-the-art protective measures and a process for regularly testing their effectiveness. As a rule, you must report a personal data breach to the supervisory authority within 72 hours (Art. 33).

    • Effectiveness testing under Art. 32(1)(d) GDPR
    • Protection against data leaks via customer accounts and interfaces
    • Documentation for data protection officers
  • Marketplaces & partners

    NIS2 & partner requirements

Operators of online marketplaces of medium size and above fall under NIS2 as digital service providers. Regardless of this, payment service providers, marketplaces, B2B customers, and cyber insurers often require test evidence.

    • Test certificate to present to partners and insurers
    • Reliable answers for security questionnaires
    • Executive summary for management and auditors

How your e-commerce penetration test works

We align the test with your business – not the other way around. Our methodology is the same across all industries; your shop determines the time windows and priorities.

Initial consultation

You tell us about your shop system, extensions, payment integration, and planned releases or promotions.

Scoping

We define environments (staging or live), test accounts, test orders, exclusions, and time windows outside your sales peaks.

Fixed-price quote within 24 hours

For your penetration test, you receive a fixed-price quote within 24 hours of scoping (on business days) – with no extra charges for the agreed scope.

Testing

We manually test the storefront, checkout, customer accounts, interfaces, and backend according to the OWASP Testing Guide. We report critical vulnerabilities immediately – during the test, by phone or email to the agreed contact person.

Report for your team and agency

An executive summary, technical details with CVSS ratings, and concrete recommendations for action that your development team or agency can implement directly. If you wish, we discuss the results together.

Retest and test certificate

We retest remediated vulnerabilities free of charge – ideally before the peak season. You can present the test certificate to partners and insurers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about penetration testing for online shops and retail

Didn’t find your question? Call us at +49 2932 465265-0 or email info@rootsektor.de.

Will the penetration test disrupt our live shop?

Your day-to-day business comes first – and we plan the test accordingly. Where possible, we test on a staging environment with identical code; in the live shop, we work with test accounts and coordinated test orders, at times outside your sales peaks. We only use techniques that generate many requests in a short time, such as automated login attempts, after consulting with you.

Can you test Shopware, Magento, WooCommerce, or Shopify shops?

Yes. For self-hosted systems such as Shopware, Magento, or WooCommerce, we test not only the storefront and checkout but also admin access, extensions, update status, and servers. For hosted platforms such as Shopify, we focus on the part you are responsible for: theme customizations, apps, your own interfaces, and configuration. We review the platform operator’s rules for security testing in advance.

Do we need a penetration test for PCI DSS 4.0.1?

That depends on your payment integration. If you fully outsource card payments to a payment service provider via redirect or iframe, the requirements are lower than if your shop serves payment forms itself or processes card data. If Requirement 11.4 applies to you, we test internal and external systems, including segmentation. The quarterly scans by an Approved Scanning Vendor (ASV) are a separate requirement.

Do you also test customer accounts, coupons, and loyalty programs?

Yes – that is often where the greatest potential for fraud lies. Typical vulnerabilities include coupons that can be redeemed multiple times through parallel requests, other customers’ orders that can be retrieved by changing the order number, or loyalty points that are not deducted after a return. For the test, we need several test accounts and, where necessary, test coupons.

Do you also test payment providers and other third parties?

We test your side of the integration – such as webhooks, payment status notifications, and the transfer of order data – within the agreed scope. We only test the providers’ own systems with their explicit consent.

Do you also test physical stores and POS systems?

Yes. We test store networks, POS systems, and Wi-Fi – above all, whether guest Wi-Fi is properly separated from the POS network and whether card terminals operate in isolation. If you wish, we add physical tests, such as whether unauthorized persons can get to network ports or back-office computers.

When is the best time for a pentest?

Before a relaunch, after major updates, or after changing plugins or payment providers – and well ahead of the holiday season or Black Friday, so there is enough time for fixes and the free retest. As a baseline, we recommend at least one test per year.
